Local Chillies & Peppers

Hi and welcome to the latest newsletter from our very special market garden, at Canara Farm, Mylor. Today Pete will be talking about the chillies and peppers currently in season.

'' This year we have some wonderful peppers growing in our poly tunnel including Red Cayenne Chillies, Finger Chillies and Spanish Padron Tapas Peppers. These plants were sown at the beginning of January and we now have some great sized peppers. ''

" One thing I did get right was starting them early and using supplementary light heating in the nursery. These plants are really slow to grow and have a long growing season before they begin to fruit. Traditionally you will hear that February is a good time to start and although that can work I started mine in November. "

" This is my first time growing Padron Peppers and I have learnt it is a nice small plant that is producing really well. This is a good one to watch for future years. It has been a bit of a trial as they are not particularly strong plants and we have lost one or two with side winds when we've had a bit of low pressure weather and rain. "

'' In the first 2 weeks of June the weather was quite wet so we decided to try and stake the plants. The best design we came up with was a triangular pattern with 4ft long canes. This support structure mimics the shape of the plant naturally and as the plant grows we can add additional string which will aid support in all directions. ''
